If you don’t know who Purple is, you should. This bed in a box mattress company exploded onto the scene in 2016 and had shown no sign of slowing down ever since.

It’s 2019, and Purple has been busy expanding their product line from sheets, pillows and even seat cushions – but no sign of a second mattress. Until now.

The New Purple mattress is the exciting new addition to the Purple sleepwear range. It’s a hybrid bed that gives you a choice of three levels of firmness.

Let’s dive into our review of the New Purple Mattress.

Construction

The New Purple MattressFirst, we’ll begin with how the mattress itself has been manufactured and made. Because it’s a hybrid design, this mattress features coils that are lined with Purple’s famous hyperelastic polymer.

Using this type of material in a mattress means that when you sleep, you get the best of both worlds – a supportive mattress that also happens to be excellent at relieving pressure, too.

It’s worth noting here that this new edition of the Purple mattress is different to the original, as the original doesn’t feature a coil system.

Cover

The cover of the mattress is made with a spandex and polyester combination, which results in a material that’s breathable and stretchy, yet thick.

Comfort Layer

The comfort layer of the mattress comprises the brand’s trademarked ‘Smart Comfort Grid.’ This hyperelastic material is great at contouring to the shape of your body almost immediately, giving you ultimate comfort.

While all three levels of firmness in the New Purple mattress has this grid, the thickness of it will depend on which number is attached to the name. This means that you can either get two inches, three inches or even four inches of their Smart Comfort Grid material.

What’s great about this material is that no matter how thick it is, it will still do a great job of providing contouring and pressure relief to your body. The foam edge that supports this grid offers an added layer and means that you can spread out over the entire mattress.

Transition Layer

The soft comfort layer and coiled system are separated by polyurethane foam, which helps you get used to all the different materials that this mattress is made out of.

Support Layer

The support layer of the Purple mattress is where you’ll find the coils – all 7.5 inches of them. Every single one of these coils is wrapped in its own special material, which means that they are not only great at giving you the support you need, but they’re also excellent for isolating any movements you may make while you’re sleeping.

The way the coils work is designed to spread the benefits of pressure relief to the top layer of the mattress. Combining this unique support system with the grid that’s made out of polymer means that you get an incredibly bouncy mattress.

Foundation Layer

At the bottom, you’ll find a thin layer of poly foam. This high-density material exists mainly to be a springboard for the coils that sit directly overhead.

Comparing the Original Purple Mattress with the New Purple Mattress

The Original Purple MattressAs we mentioned briefly, one of the most significant changes to the Purple mattress is the hybrid design. Because the New Purple mattress includes coils, you’ll experience a much bouncier mattress.

Ultimately, this helps you to stay on top of the mattress and not sink into it. The edge support is also a new and improved feature of the mattress – it creates more stability at the sides of the bed to prevent you from rolling towards the edge.

Firmness

Let’s take a look at the stability and feel of the New Purple mattress.

When you place your hand on it and apply a light amount of pressure, you can feel the hyperelastic polymer that’s located in the comfort layer. A standard query that you may have about a mattress like this is whether or not the grid part of it is going to feel uncomfortable or strange against your body.

However, we found that the grid walls give way almost immediately, which alludes to a good amount of support and pressure relief. If you place more pressure on the mattress, you’ll be met with resistance that will bounce you back nicely.

It’s worth noting with the firmness of this mattress that different weights will experience it differently. This means that heavier sleepers may find themselves sinking into the bed more quickly than lighter sleepers.

This is one major reason why Purple decided to manufacture their mattress in three different levels of firmness.

Different Experiences of Pressure

Back

When you lie on your back on the Purple mattress, it will feel like your weight is evenly distributed across the surface area. The comfort grid will fill out the space in your lumbar area and make you feel like the mattress is quickly conforming to your body shape. Because this mattress offers a high level of bounce, it’s easy to shift sleeping positions without being too disrupted.

Side

When you lie on your side on this mattress, you will experience a high level of pressure relief. On other mattresses, you may have experienced discomfort around your hips and shoulders because these are the points on the body that can sink deep into a mattress without much bounce. However, because the New Purple mattress has a high level of bounce, you won’t come across this issue with it.

Stomach

You will notice that if you sleep on your stomach, your hips won’t sink too far into the Purple mattress. You’ll also be able to feel that your spine is nice and aligned, which is a massive plus for stomach sleepers. The support and pressure relief of the New Purple mattress for stomach sleepers is impressive.

Motion Transfer

This part of the review looks at how much the New Purple mattress is going to be able to withstand any motion transfer. This is a particularly important feature to look at if you’re planning on sharing your bed with your partner.

Because this mattress has a high level of bounce, it is able to withstand a lot of motion, which means you won’t be disturbed if your partner is an active sleeper or if they get up a lot in the middle of the night.

The firmness of this mattress also helps to contain any motion that’s made, which means that you can sleep soundly on your side of the bed no matter what your partner is doing on their side.

Sinkage

Ultimately, you’re quite likely to sink a little bit into the first initial layer of the New Purple mattress. However, because of the coils right underneath this layer and will push back against you, it will feel like you’re sleeping right on top of it, not in it.

With the less firm mattress option, you are going to sink a little deeper into the mattress. It all comes down to personal preference.

Edge Support

When you lie close to the edge of the New Purple mattress, you’ll feel as if you’re getting just as much support as if you were lying right in the middle.

One thing you may notice as you get closer to the edge, however, is a slightly different feeling from the top layer. This is because the comfort grid is replaced with poly foam that helps gives the side even more support.

Basic Information

Purple mattress company offers you a 100-day free trial, which means that you can try the mattress for one hundred days and if you don’t like it you can return it and get your money back as well. It comes with a ten-year warranty, and the company offers free delivery.

Unlike the original Purple mattress, this one doesn’t come all packed up in a box. However, Purple does send people along with the mattress to set it up for you, which is a big plus.

When it comes to pricing, the smallest size will set you back $1299 while the largest option is $3499.

Original Purple Mattress Vs. New Purple Mattress

Let’s take a look at some of the most significant differences between the original purple mattress and the new edition:

Design

One of the most significant differences we found between these two mattresses is their design. This is because the new version comes with the coiled system, making it much more of a supportive option than the original.

Because these coils are individually wrapped, they can also help to isolate your motion, another innovative feature you don’t get with the original.

Bounce

With the New Purple mattress, you’ll find that you get a lot more bounce than the original. This is primarily because of how the coils match with the comfort layer, which ultimately helps you to stay lying right on top of it.

Supportive Edge

Having edge support is a bonus that also helps to improve the overall support that the New Purple mattress offers.

Who Benefits from the New Purple?

If You Need Pressure Relief

Because you’ll get a great combination of support and pressure relief, this is an excellent option for anyone who is suffering from pain and discomfort, especially when they sleep.

If You Want a Cool Sleep

The comfort grid is designed to be an open structure that helps the air flow through nicely. This prevents things from heating up too much.

If You Want a Bouncy Mattress

You’re going to find a lot of bounce with the New Purple mattress. If you have an aversion to sinking into the surface of your bed, you’ll want to check out this new addition.

If You Like Durability

Both the polymer material and coils found in this mattress means that while it may set you back initially, you’ll find that it will last you a long time.

Final Thoughts

The Purple mattress company is well known for creating durable, innovative mattresses that will change the way you sleep for the better. Their new addition to the Purple product range is the New Purple mattress, with a couple of exciting features found all three levels of firmness.

Because the comfort layer comes in varying height levels, you’ll benefit from different things depending on which position you like to sleep in the most.

Not only will you be able to sleep well without overheating, but the New Purple mattress also provides an excellent level of pressure relief and support as well.
